Thursday, Nov. 25 - Thanksgiving with Serena

Thanksgiving was definitely a memorable day this year. ;) I'll just start with the food and fun, though. :D We began preparing all the stuff as soon as we woke up.

Chopped pecans for the pecan pie and the sweet potato casserole. I know now why my grandmother loves her pecan chopping machine so much.

Homemade rolls...rising.

Peeling potatoes for the mashed potatoes.

Making the dressing.

The dressing all put together. I think I put too much sage, though. :( I'll never be able to make it as well as my grandmother. She's awesome.

Heavenly mac and cheese with Velveeta (thanks, Jill) and cheddar. The cheddar is white because it's not American...it's from London.

The finished rolls.

Jeff and Jill's mashed potatoes.

Pumpkin and Pecan Pies.

The food...almost all ready.

We forgot to take pictures once all the food was on the table. We had so many other things going on (explained later in this post). O-well. Once dinner was over, we made some coffee and played a game while we ate dessert.

Serena had never heard of creamer. So, Jason made her three small cups of creamer and coffee, in addition to her regular cup of coffee, so that she could try each flavor.

Okay...here's the story of Thanksgiving this year. For those of you who aren't familiar with our apartment situation, we've had hot water heater issues for about a year now. We are constantly calling repairmen to come fix it. Recently, the button that is used to flush our toilet started being very finicky. Occasionally it will not flush and we have to use a bucket of water to flush the toilet.

Well, of course, the hot water heater went out the day after Jeff and Jill arrived. But, thankfully, we were able to find someone to come out and fix it on Saturday.

Then, the sink clogged up. It was still draining, just very slowly. Until the day before Thanksgiving. It would not drain at all. We tried three bottles of Mr. Muscolo (like Drain-O). Jason tried using a plunger. Nothing seemed to work.

So Jason called a handyman that he knew. He said he would come the next day (Thanksgiving). We expected him to come in the morning or maybe even around noon, thinking he'd definitely want to be finished by 5pm. But...they didn't even arrive until 5:30pm on Thanksgiving day. Oh my! So, we were not able to wash any dishes as we were preparing food and getting everything together.

Then, the handymen could not find the problem. So they were looking desperately for another way into the plumbing system of the apartment. So, we moved furniture in the living room and the washing machine in the bathroom and still found nothing. Then, he wanted to look behind our "pantry." So....while we were still trying to get everything cooked and together for Thanksgiving dinner, we had to move everything out of the pantry and onto the table (because all the dirty dishes were taking up the entire counter space) so that they could see behind our pantry.

Jeff was in charge of organizing the stuff on the table.

All our food on the table.

Things ended up fine. The handymen were still here when Serena arrived for dinner. But they finally left before we started dinner. They were never able to fix the problem. And they left a huge mess in the kitchen and the bathroom. It was disgusting. :(

Then, the next morning, I tried to wash a load of clothes. I was sitting in the living room when the washing machine started making a very strange noise. I ran into the bathroom to see what was going on and water was rushing out from under the washing machine. Seriously??? We laid towels down to soak up the water and then realized what had caused it. The "repair" men had unplugged the drain of the washing machine and never plugged it back in. Goodness gracious. We can't win for losing here.

Nonetheless, I'm so thankful to have my sister (and brother-in-law) here for Thanksgiving this year. :D

Wednesday, Nov. 24 - Historic City Center

On Wednesday, we went to downtown Naples, the Historic City Center. First, we took Jeff and Jill to a coffee shop that is near the place where we attended language school. This is the place with the best cappuccinos in all of Naples. It was cold and rainy, so we each had a cappuccino. Then we headed down to the center of the area where there are several Catholic churches that you can go inside and tour. And the most important part of the Historic City Center was lunch. We took them to Sorbillo's, which is the best pizzeria in Naples. It's wonderful! After lunch, Jason and Jeff headed back to the coffee shop to get another cappuccino, while Jill and I headed back to the house to begin preparing for our Thanksgiving meal the next day. Unfortunately, I have no pictures for this day. But, if you know my sister, you can probably see some pictures on her facebook page.

Tuesday, Nov. 23 - Amalfi Coast

This was a wonderful day to go to the Amalfi Coast. It was slightly rainy, but stopped enough for us to stop and take pictures every time we pulled over. And at the end of the trip, we were reminded of a promise God made and His faithfulness.

The water was gorgeous!

The wind was blowing pretty hard and the waves were incredible.

Speaking of incredible...

Thank You, God for your beautiful reminders of Your faithfulness.

Monday, Nov. 22 - Rome

With severe thunderstorms in the forecast for Monday, we decided to hold off on the Amalfi coast and hope that the rain was not quite as bad in Rome. We didn't get as early of a start as we had hoped for Rome, but the lines weren't long anyway. Jeff and Jill went into the Vatican while Jason and I waited in a coffee shop across the street and stayed dry. The rest of the day is pretty much a blur. I'm not too fond of the touristy part of Rome. But here's a few pictures from the trip. :D

This is the only face he would give me.

Sunday, Nov. 21 - Church and Rain

Things have been pretty crazy this week and we've gotten a little behind on the blog. But, we're going to catch you up on all the things we've done with Jeff and Jill this week. On Sunday, we all went to church here in our neighborhood. After church, we returned to the apartment to discuss the adventures of the week. And the bottom fell out of the sky. It rained all afternoon and most of the night. We stayed in and played games and watched movies. It was a nice, relaxing, rainy afternoon.

Fellowship with Antonio and the Team

For those of you who didn't already know, we have a "special" hot water heater. We call about once a month to have someone out to the house to get it "repaired." Basically, they patch a gaping hole with a bandaid. At any rate, the hot water heater broke down once again this morning. :/ Jason spent the morning calling companies around the city trying to find someone who could come out to fix it today. Finally, after several phone calls, he found a repair man and the hot water heater is back in service...for now.

Once that situation was under control, we all went out to a coffee shop with a friend of ours, Antonio.

After hanging out most of the afternoon with Antonio, we went over to our supervisors' house for a time of worship and fellowship. While the boys and Cortney played Mario Bros. on the Wii...

All in all, it was good day...despite all the rain.

Sorrento with Jeff and Jill

The original plan for the day was to head to Pompeii after lunch and then continue on to Sorrento for the rest of the afternoon. It was beautiful weather this morning. The sun was shining and the skies were clear. It was going to be a great day for sightseeing. However, it began to rain as soon as we stepped out of the train in Pompeii and we arrived around 3:40pm to find out that they closed at 3:30pm. O-well.

So we got back on the train and went straight to Sorrento. I was exceptionally excited because Sorrento has Christmas lights up already. :D

See the lights over the street? No? Well, they are there, but unfortunately, they do not turn them on until December 1st. Sad day.
